unfortunately, this morning, I received an email from a Yahoo group of which I am a member... it say's....
"Kalau si anwar ni jadi PM macam mana dua orang anakku nak dapat scholarship belajar kat USA? hermm... sakit kelapa"
hmmm... am so disappointed to see such remark... dah pegi merantau jauh2 sampai ke UAE, tapi assisted mentality masih ada.... I am assuming (just for the sake of the discussion), that this person is earning quite OK, well... working in Dubai maaa... (they don't just get someone without special experience to come and work here...), but still melukut ditepi gantang...? hmmm....
I have heard stories where Uncle2, Auntie2, Ah So2, Apek2 working so hard day and nite in their kebun, or grocery store to ensure that they have enough money to send their kids to university... I have also heard of fellow non Malay Malaysians who had to work hard part time during their university time to earn some pocket money to pay for tuition fees...
are Malays not courageous enough to go through some hardship to ensure a better future for their kids...? Melayu nih forever "layu" ker...? may be kena buat "rebranding" exercise... tukar jadik "Memaju" ker, "Mewasan" ker (melayu + berwawasan) , or just simply "Malaysian"?
perlukah kita terus bergantung kepada biasiswa? (luckily that now we have more education loan instead of scholarships....).
we have to expect the worse and be prepared for it.... dan bukannya terus mengharapkan bantuan, subsidi, bantuan, subsidi, bantuan, subsidi... and more bantuan, and more subsidi....
am not saying that the government shouldn't help....
am saying that we should STOP expecting that somebody will help us...
and take the necessary measures to ensure that we can survive and succeed without help....

i totally agree with you. i'm pissed with that email as well. dah kayo pun nak harapkan bantuan,whilst there's so many poor people yang really in need of that scholarship.. looking back, i'm using my biasiswa money to buy books and foods when some of my friends from well to do family use the money for shopping..go figure
Itulah pasal. Selagi semua nak mengharap kan bantuan, selagi tu la org tak appreciate & tak akan berusaha betul2 tuk succeed. Dah semuanya free aje. Cuba kalau kita tengok mak bapak kita kerja teruk bertahun2 utk support kita belajar - for sure we will do everything in our power to excell... Ini tidak. Dah dapat benda free, campak buang pun tak terasa langsung kehilangan nye... Tapi bila orang nak tarik balik benda free tu - kecoh satu Malaya org2 macam tu buat bising...

Ayo - bagilah peluang anak tu matang dulu - nak cari duit kat mana - Aku confirm anak dia lepas habis belajar - duk menonggek tak tahu nak buat aper jugak - sebab semuanya dapat subsidi je - tah2 makan bersuap lagi. hahah

i beg to differ from u bro. not all malays are like that, not all malays are lazy, tak maju, tak membangun, etc. u, me & ur fellow commentors are mostly malays as well. when we generalize, we're included as well.
we need to look back at history, before lambasting on the present scenario/leaders. we're where we are because of past leaders. great leaders like Tun Razak. with the scholarship we have developed this far. the only problem (yes, agreed Melayu mudah lupa)...melayu also mostly go for short-term gain.
Tun Razak's vision was not prolonged to develop Malays forever. The 'old man' now has to see all the disaster that happen because of his doings (and he as other malays, mudah lupa that he contributed to the problems, he disturb the system, he corrupted the malays, etc etc).
i'm open for competition..i'm ok for malaysian..but throw away Malays ? am proud that am malays. with all the bad remarks/label for malays, am going to show them all that i'm not the typical malay (if i may put it that way). and i believed, we all are.
talking about rebranding...ideas how can we start doing that ? :D
Well, kalau dia nak anak dia dapat scholarship nak study kat US, then he as a parent needs to ensure that his child is properly equipped to be competitive to get that scolarship la kan? Ish ... ish ...

I got 6 siblings, 4 of us got straight As in SPM, 5 principles in STPM. NONE of us got any scholarship or any monetary help. My father earned RM800 as a mechanic in a shipyard. And yes, I'm glad I'd been brought up this way, I'm stronger now.

Haizam, I totally agree with you... what the nation has done so was good, NEP was good, ITM was good.... but they have been abused, they have not evolved with time, they are no longer relevant with time... instead of pushing the Bumiputera to work hard and start standing on their feet, the Bumiputeras are fed forever with assistance.... bila NEP dah abih, di ganti dgn prgm baru, tukar nama, but content is the same.... despite what TDM has done in the past, I admire him and think tat he was a GREAT leader... he had the vision, he started to stop giving scholarships, and change them to loans (convertible loans...), he started to cut the privileges to Bumiputera... that's how it should be done... cut them bit by bit... then cut them all... all Malaysians will be entitled to the same privileges & benefits... wasn't that the vision of NEP? to create an equal standing base & opportunity for all... tapi bila TDM ciao, tengok ler aper dah jadik...? Nie sikap orang melayu...nak hantar anak belajar pun harapkan biasiswa dr kerajaan. Mcm maner nak maju..kalau dr kecik anak tu disimpan kan duit pasti bila sudah besau ada duit untuk hantar belajar. X apayah nak harapkan orang lain. X cukup ker...belajar dr sekolah rendah dan menengah percuma, nak masuk university pun nak orang tanggung !!!.
Zuer suka iklan petronas untuk merdeka tahun ni.. Bapak sampai ikat perut..tak beli apa2 untuk anak...end nyer ada gak duit hantar anak belajar...Tak gitu...Lu pikir lah sendiri...!!!

It just Malay would feel they will loose it. I did at first but when look back - I might not need to feel that way
GOD make everybody different but perfect in his own way; - Right now, everybody is scared of losing their comfort zone - and truthfully - it is not just Malay - changes like this is affecting not just Malay community - when you live in Malaysia - you might see there is Malay who become more competitive and people do feel awkward with it.
Once everybody use to it, it just ok.
My opinion - it might be offensive to some people - I think most people feel like if they are Malay they own Islam as their religion. Islam is Universal; would you scrutinize non-bumi who is Islam? would you fight for ketuanan Melayu if others is Islam like you - You might think twice instead.
So treat everybody equally no matter what religion they are and what race they be.
