Definition : In Saudi Arabia, the word “Compound” means a “resort like” closed community housing estate where life is like being in a Western country (or non Islamic country rather…. Dunno how to classify it correctly) : no wearing of Abaya for ladies, mini market, open swimming pool, “can go swimming fool, boleh enjoy2” (bak kata Julie Dahlan…:)), sometimes they even have their own little screening room for latest movies, can have parties and gathering…. In a nutshell, a “normal life” for Westerners (but still without alcohol of course, unless you brew your own at home)
These Compounds are guarded closed communities (by Saudi army), surrounded by high walls and barb wires. Saudis are not allowed to live in compounds, only foreigners (they can visit friends of course, but cannot rent any villas, apartments in the compunds). Even though Compounds are originally meant for non Muslim to have an easier life in Saudi Arabia, some Muslim families (foreign Muslim families – Malaysians for example) have also opted to stay in compounds for its less strict community style leaving : no need to wear abaya when you go out of the house, bebudak pompuan can go jalan2 with friends in the same compound, can go play tennis with friends…etc etc… the kind of life that you have in Malaysia for example….
Guess what… I have just learned that in certain compounds, the opposite rule of Saudi law is implemented by the compound management…. Ladies wearing “tudung” (not abaya) are basically not welcome…
